Good and bad publicity for my website are the same right?

No.

Publicity can be referred in the online world as to how many people are linking to your site, the more the better.

The old addage "Bad PR is good PR", doesn't work no more for the online world.

Google has announced Dec 2010 that its search engine has been changed to combat those who are driving traffic to their site by generating lots of negative feedback.  This in turn is driving the sites up in the Google ranks previously.

Now Google has changed it so that positive or neutral feedback has a significant more weighting to provide high ranking.  This probably means no difference to positive or neutral feedback, though it certainly would mean that negative feedback won't provide any extra value to your website, if it doesn't even reduce the value by ranking lower.
