 A couple of key technologies have spent the last 8-9 years developing into mature solutions, though at this point in Australia one of these technologies has matured with only very limited providers.  That is hosting your PBX, ie not having it on site.  For larger organisations this is not necessarily recommended, though for any business with less than 20 staff, this can be a great solution. 

Hosting your PBX generally means greater reliability.  Why, how could this be?  Well simply put, most serious providers will be set up so that your customers will never again receive a busy signal.  A hosted PBX system is built with much higher reliability hardware and in an evironment far more reliabile than your standard computer room.  All updates and maintenance are carried out by staff who know exactly what they are doing. 

Consider your traditional phone system in the office, built in China with cheap parts.  If it fails, you don't receive phone calls.  If you have a power outage onsite, your customers can't ring and get a busy signal.  How about just a power surge and it wipes the phone system settings back to Korean?  Believe you me, it happens!  Yes you might own that equipment, but ever tried selling a second hand phone system? 

The second technology is commonly discussed, but often misunderstood, VOIP or IPTEL as it should be known.  VOIP is actually a method of sending Voice traffic, not a solution.  IPTEL is the entire solution, the connectivity, the hardware, the configuration and most importantly with standards.  A business IPTEL solution needs to meet strict standards to ensure reliability is not less, but greater than the current solution with the great benefits and functionality that come with such a solution.
