Keeping you and your computer safe online

This article is designed to outline the basics of what you should have in order to remain minimally safe online.

Firstly, in this article there is a need to refer to certain technology words and without having to explain them all, here is a list of key words I may use and links to their explaination:

Virus

Trojan

Key Logger

Anti-Virus software

Malware

Spyware

Anti-Spyware

Now that I have got that out of the way, here is my top 10 tips on what to do.

  • Download and install free anti-virus software, my recommendation is AVG, click here for their website.
  • Download and install anti-spyware software, my recommendation is Super Anti-Spyware, click here for their website.
  • Open up "My computer" and right click the main hard drive, should be "C" drive, select the properties.  Run the "disk cleanup" button and get rid of all files.
  • Go back to your main drive, find the Windows/temp folder and ensure nothing is left, delete what is there.
  • Open up Super anti-spyware and click on preferences.  Enable the tick box so that Super anti-spyware runs when Windows starts up and equally to run a complete scan also when Windows starts up.
  • Restart your computer and let all the processes do its course, depending if your computer is infected, will drive the time it takes.  The more problems you have, the longer it will take.
  • WARNING - if there are results from the scan showing viruses, trojans or key loggers, contact me urgently for advice prior to proceeding, otherwise take the following course of action at your own risk.
  • Go to the results and highlight all problems and delete.  Again I need to warn you, some of these files might be needed by Windows and other programs, which may stop your computer from running.
  • Once this is all done, go to Windows update and update all software, this specifically includes to the latest Internet explorer option.
  • Run AVG anti-virus software once all restarting is complete and see if any results come up, if not you have reached the minimal standard of online safety and health for your computer.

In summary, most business computers would find infections, nearly all home computers would find infections and it is these infections that make your online safety and computer health at severe risk.  By simply taking the above instructions, you are in a far better position to enjoy the wonders of the Internet.  If you need any further advice, please contact us.
